Green (Rainy) Season in Costa Rica

To start with, we refer to the “high season” or “dry season” when the weather is nice and hot, while the green season when the rain characterizes most of the days. When planning your Jaco, Costa Rica, vacation you need to consider the pros and cons of visiting during the dry versus green season.

The dry season lasts from November to May and brings blue skies and warm sunshine. December and January are very windy but it is very helpful with the constant sunshine. They are the coolest months of the year, while March and April are the hottest months of the dry season. The pros of this season is that the continuous hours of hot and sun are ideal for outdoor adventures from morning until night. During those months in Jaco many coloured festivals are organized. The cons are that, because it’s the high season, all the prices are very high. So you will pay full price for hotel rooms, transportation and all the tours. Also, attractions may be more crowded. Because of that, during the major holidays it is recommended to book everything in advance.

The green season, which is called the wet season or Costa Rican winter, lasts from June to October. The temperatures are very comfortable and they reach a maximum of 27 degrees. It doesn’t rain all day during the green season, usually between 2pm and 4pm, sometimes later. The rainiest months are September and October. The pros are that all the vegetation comes alive with green landscapes. National parks and attractions are less crowded. Even at the last minute you can get comfortable prices for accomodation, transportation, and other activities. A potential negative aspect is that you need to plan the excursions during the morning because usually during the afternoon it rains.
